Linda Holmes - NPR

Saturday Night Live has always had a stealthily big heart. You can see it when the hosts people really like get hugs from everyone at the end of a show, and you can see it when people come back for guest appearances, and you’ve certainly seen it in some…

So I finally watched the most recent episode of Sherlock and I’m sure someone covered this before but if this episode was not touching on the Sublime, I don’t know what else you would call it. While the show didn’t feature many Rückenfigur’s (x), there were still plenty of shots (like the one above) that focused on the immense power that nature has in its connection to man with the subject reflecting that very idea.

The horror element of “The Hound of Baskerville” works as a magnifier into themes that Sherlock has covered before like self-doubt, fear, and vulnerability. These are elements that make up the feeling of The Sublime. The overall reference to the Romantic period is being used as a way to show the inevitability that even the infallible Sherlock Holmes may occasionally be tempted by the less logical side of reasoning.

It is wonderful to see the art direction including subtle references to what would’ve been contemporary artists of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. “Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog” by Caspar David Friedrich is often used as the icon of Romanticism with a hint of the sublime. Even a viewer without an art history background can rely on these powerful images to understand the larger tone the episode is trying to achieve. I am sure there are more references like this and I can’t wait to go back and stretch to find more.

Bobby does The Incredible Hulk from dress on SNL this week. I can not believe this didn’t make it.

This is a trick The Hulk learned at camp.
